Dear ADNA List Subscriber,

The Atlanta City Council is reviewing a proposed ordinance for managing and regulating the public vending program, including replacing the current vending stalls with new vending stands and upgrading the variety of merchandise offered for sale by vendors on public right of way.

Tonight, Tuesday July 15, at 5pm at City Hall Committee Room #2  the public may attend a study session that will continue to debate this proposal.  This is a good opportunity to learn about this public-private partnership plan, see pictures of existing (do we need to?) stalls and proposed replacements.  It is also a chance to balance the vendors who will be there to protect their turf and way of life.  This proposal includes financial and business plan assistance from the Atlanta Development Authority and Georgia State University's business school to help current vendors in the transition.

During last week's City Council work session David Edwards (city staff from the Mayor's Office) completed the review of the proposed vending ordinance with the Council members that were present including Cleta Winslow, Joyce Shepard, Mary Norwood, and Ceasar Mitchell.  There were some outspoken vendors in attendance who spoke against the ordinance, mostly complaining about having to pay rent and their desire to keep their current locations.

ADNA supports this new legislation as it progresses through City Council.  As downtown residents please show your support by writing to your city council members or attending this work session.
