It's Time to Help Clean Up Oakland Cemetary! After receiving many offers to help with March 14 tornado clean-up, the Historic Oakland Cemetary is pleased to announce that they are ready for a full-scale effort and they can (at last!) use the community's help! Glass from the downtown high rises
and roofing materials from nearby buildings blew into the cemetery and is scattered over a very large area
(approximately 48 acres). We will
work in small groups to carefully inspect sections of the cemetery and remove
foreign objects that pose threats. Pieces of broken grave markers and
monuments will be left where they lie.
The
Foundation will provide refreshments, restroom facilities, maps, first aid
kits, trash bags, and staff to direct the project. They ask that you
provide your own heavy work gloves and wear close-toed shoes. They are
seeking 100 volunteers for Saturday, July 12 from 8:30 a.m. until noon and
another 100 volunteers for Saturday, August 9 from 8:30 a.m. until noon. Please
pre-register by sending an e-mail to kkuharic@oaklandcemetery.com
