U.S. Social Forum Atlanta: June 27 - July 1, 2007 Starting this Wednesday, June 27 there is a scheduled convention and series of workshops sponsored by the US Social Forum that may have an impact on Downtown Atlanta businesses and residents.
The US Social Forum is a convention of protesters and, while they are usually well behaved, loosely affiliated individuals and organizations may use less than peaceful methods when the opportunity presents itself to target businesses and government buildings. The Atlanta Police Department (APD) has been working with Homeland Security and all downtown law enforcement personnel to try to anticipate the unexpected but wants you to be aware of this event and call 911 if you notice anything that does not seem usual.
Permitted March: July 27 at 2 pm from the Capitol Bldg north to Decatur St, right at Peachtree, right at Ralph McGill, left at Piedmont, ending at the Civic Center and Renaissance Park. Rolling roadblocks will follow the route and APD expects the march to finish before 4pm.
Daily workshops held at the Civic Center from 9-4:30pm (expecting 2000 attendance each day) with events following at Renaissance Park until 10pm. The activities at Renaissance Park will be held to the usual standards of a permitted event and the park will close at 11pm. No camping will be allowed in any city parks.
While on the subject of road closings, be reminded that Baker Street between Courtland and Peachtree will be closed starting this Friday June 29 through the end of the year as the Marriott Marquis completes renovations.
