U.S. Court of Appeals Annex

Jeffrey Jensen, an historic preservation specialist with the General Services Administration, announced the start of a study to determine the feasibility of using two neighboring buildings at 70 Fairlie and 96 Poplar as an annex for the U.S. Court of Appeals building on Forsyth Street. Jensen said that the GSA is hoping to keep the court in Fairlie-Poplar, provided that the buildings can meet the needs of the court. Jensen and his review team will hold a public meeting on their findings in about 6 months.

Woodruff Park Renovations

ADNA Board member Cooper Holland spoke about plans for renovating Woodruff Park this fall. Plans include drainage improvements; the addition of electrical power sources for special events; and the addition of WI-FI (wireless fidelity) technology, so that students, residents, and Downtown workers can access the internet while enjoying the park. During the renovation period, much of the park will be closed to the public. Future plans for the park include space for a dog run. Central Atlanta Progress (CAP) is looking into the possibility of obtaining holiday lights from Life University for this year’s Let’s Do the Holidays Downtown campaign.

David Wardell, VP of Operations and Public Safety for CAP, and Sergeant Willie Davenport of MARTA Police, reviewed current practices and policies for keeping Woodruff and Underground Atlanta safe and clean. Wardell said that Woodruff is cleaned 4 times a day, 7 days a week. Davenport said that a plainclothes team of MARTA Police has joined the MARTA foot and bike patrols.

ADNA Board Drafts Governace Changes

ADNA President Erich Starrett introduced members to proposed changes in the governing structure of the Board. The changes would create a series of Board vice presidencies with specific leadership functions for the organization in the following areas: Programs, Membership, Finance, Communications, Community Affairs, and Special Events. The positions of President and Secretary would remain, while the positions of Vice President and Treasurer would be incorporated into the proposed changes.

The ADNA encourages Downtown residents to consider running for election to the Board this November for service in 2005 and to consider joining a committee in one of the above areas. Expressions of interest may be sent to the ADNA: downtownatl@hotmail.com.
