Below are minutes for the August 14, 2001, meeting of the Atlanta Downtown Neighborhood Association. Notes were written by Wendy Darling.

Thansk to Hard Rock!

Thank you to Hard Rock, specifically Susan Cobb, their sales manager, for hearing our call for space and providing not just the Velvet Underground but drinks, munchies and even really, really good brownies!

Presentations

Atlanta Bicycle Campagin

Dennis Hoffarth, Executive Director of ABC since 1997, gave a talk not only about his organization and its work in Atlanta -- advocating for bikers, bikelanes, paths, bike racks on buses -- but about biking as a true alternative form of transportation. Atlanta Bicycle Campaign has a bike education class that would be great for those of us who want to learn to be better bikers and to ride safely here in the big city. For information on "Effective Cycling for Adults" (class taught at locations all around Atlanta, cost $20/student) contact ABC. Contact: http://www.atlantabike.org, 404-881-1112, atlantabike@mindspring.com.

Cathy Woolard,
City Councilperson and Candidate for Council President

Cathy presented herself as a candidate for City Council President, going over her personal background as an Atlanta native and her work over the past four years as she's served on the Council. Cathy also handled Q&A on issues ranging from sewers to quality of life issues to economic development. Cathy also talked about possibly doing a neighborhood cleanup Downtown, since that's something she's been helping happen in a lot neighborhoods. Theatrical Outfit

Beth Haynes did a promo for Theatrical Outfit. Currently based at the Rialto Center for the Performing Arts (http://www.rialtocenter.org), Theatrical Outfit brings live theater to Atlanta -- and right into the laps of Downtown residents. Beth told us about their upcoming season and their BIG plans to move into the old Herren's Building on Luckie Street. They also have a great subscription deal -- BUY 2 SUBSCRIPTIONS, GET 4! Residents can receive four season subscriptions (five great shows) for the price of two. All four subscriptions must be for the same performance day and ordered at the same time by calling 404-577-5257 ext. 13. For more info., see http://www.theatricaloutfit.org.

Miriam Holland, Mei Zhong

Miriam spread word about the Taiji training sessions she leads at Centennial Olmpic Park every Saturday morning. Miriam even did a really, really nice live demonstration that made people relaxed just watching! For more info.: meizhong@mindspring.com.

And our non-profit status is retroactive--it will allow you to itemize your donation on your 2001 taxes.
