Informal socializing with about 40 in attendance took place from 6:30
until 7:00 at the Sweet Auburn Curb Market, with food provided by Curb Market Vendors.
ADNA welcome and business portion opened by Maria Balais, followed by
license and zoning reviews presented by Whitney Rusert in Chris
Ciovacco's absence.
Caleb Racicot, with Tunnell, Spangler, Walsh & Associates, presented a
request for rezoning an area that is not in NPU-M but out of courtesy
to us and to the ADNA neighborhood. The location at 396 Piedmont Ave.
is being developed by Criterion Development Partners and needs to be
rezoned from the current high-rise designation to a low-rise,
retail-residential mix. It was moved and approved that ADNA support
their request.
Legacy Property Group, represented by Mehmet Okuyan and Brad Mann,
presented a request to apply for special zoning permission to develop
a helicopter landing facility atop the Hyatt Garden hotel that is
being developed at 280 Luckie St. It is adjacent to Centennial Park
West condominiums and across from the Georgia Aquarium.
The facility would be for passenger drop-off and pick-up only and
would not be open for general aviation use. Hours are limited, from
7am-midnight, and there would be no fueling facility. The property
includes a 15-story hotel, restaurant and street level stores. This
facility would also benefit GWCC, and the Georgia Aquarium. It was
moved and approved by voting ADNA members.
Jen Henderson, who is doing Public Relations work for the Sweet Auburn
Curb Market, presented interesting historical information about the
market's origins. Started in 1918 by a group of women who wanted a
central location for farmers to bring produce to the city, its first
building was a tent erected on land cleared by a massive fire. A
permanent structure (fireproof brick and concrete) was built in 1924.
In addition to produce, customers could select from live chickens that
were butchered on-site. The Curb Market was the also first in the
city to offer pre-packaged meats.
Pamela Patterson, the Municipal Market Controller, introduced new
vendors at the market, including Flowers by Taffie, The Smoothie
Blender, DiRienzo's Italian Deli (delivery coming soon), and All
Aboard Coffee, a fresh coffee roaster. All vendors that were open
during the meeting served samples and encouraged member input on what
we'd like them to offer. Existing vendors include fresh produce,
meats, cheeses, and fish and if you're into exotic or ethnic cooking,
the market is one of very few places in the city to buy supplies.
Future events for the Curb Market include a monthly Artist Market
every third Saturday starting August 19 and a Harvest Day Celebration,
which will be held on October 21 with baking contests, pumpkins and
crafts.
Owned by the city of Atlanta, the Curb Market is run by a board of
directors that is appointed by the Atlanta City Council and includes
our downtown neighbor, Cooper Holland. The market is open Monday
through Saturday from 8am – 6pm. More information can be found at:
