are minutes for the August 10, 2004, Community Meeting of the
Atlanta Downtown Neighborhood Association. Due to a last-minute
scheduling conflict at the Central Atlanta Library, the meeting
was moved to the atrium of the Healey Building. Minutes by ADNA
Secretary Jay Tribby.
The next Community Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, September
14, from 6:30-8 pm in the auditorium of the Central Atlanta
Library.
Welcomes
ADNA President Erich Starrett opened the meeting at 6:45
p.m.
ADNA Obtains Official Non-Profit Status
The ADNA has received notification that its application for
501 (c) 3 nonprofit status has been approved. Mr. Starrett
thanked Board member and former ADNA President Dorthey Hurst
for her commitment to seeing the application through to approval.
For two years, the ADNA has had provisional status as a 501
(c) 3 organization, pending final review; this notification
removes the provisional approval and makes it final.
ADNA Approves New Signage for GSU Campus
Elizabeth Jones, Assistant Vice President, Budget, Spectrum
and Administrative Support for Finance and Administration
at Georgia State University, made a presentation on new signage
that is being proposed for the GSU campus in Downtown Atlanta.
The signage is intended to calm traffic by letting Downtown
drivers know that they are on the campus of an urban educational
institution. GSU will assume responsibility for maintenance
of the signage and will pay the city a small fee. Ms. Jones
requested a letter of support regarding the signage,which
should appear in 6-12 months, pending approval by various
city political entities. A motion to send a letter of support
was approved unanimously. Last week, the ADNA Board of Directors
approved an identical motion.
Gold Medal Garden Receives
Funding from Blank Foundation
ADNA Board member Dorthey Hurst announced that the Gold Medal
Garden at the north end of Centennial Olympic Park has received
funding from the Blank Family Foundation. She stated that
ADNA support of the funding application was instrumental in
its approval. "We’ve had our fingers in the dirt
in this project from Day 1!" she said.
Latino Festival @ Underground Aug. 29
Ms. Hurst announced that this year’s Latino Festival
is scheduled for August 29 at Underground Atlanta. The Festival
anticipates 40,000 attendees, which takes place exclusively
on Underground property. By a unanimous vote, the ADNA approved
a motion in support of the Festival.
New Caribbean Restaurant
Receives ADNA Approval
Gavin McBean of Ginger Bay Café, a new Caribbean restaurant
across from the Sheraton on Courtland Street, asked for the
ADNA’s support of its request for a liquor license from
NPU-M. Mr. McBean owns the original Ginger Bay restaurant
in Hollywood, Florida. The restaurant will serve upscale Caribbean
cuisine and feature light reggae and jazz music on the weekends.
By a unanimous vote, the ADNA approved the request of Ginger
Bay to apply for a liquor license from NPU-M.
