2004 Downtown Festival & Tour of Lofts

Co-Chairs Jennifer Henderson and Maria Balais reported on final plans for this week’s Festival and Tour. Everything is on track for a full weekend of events, starting with a V.I.P. party on June 10. This year’s Festival includes a number of new features, with two music stages and a large increase in the number of artists' booths.

Update: Commuter Buses on Peachtree

Heather Alhadeff of Central Atlanta Progress (CAP) updated ADNA on the arrival of new express commuter buses on Peachtree Street, as recently approved by the Georgia Regional Transit Authority. Alhadeff said that CAP supports express bus service for Downtown, but that it questions the use of Peachtree for the purpose of picking up and discharging commuter bus passengers. She said that CAP is exploring alternate routes for commuter buses. A long-term alternative is needed, she said. By next year, as many as 49 oversized commuter buses will be bringing commuters into Downtown.

Panel: Atlanta Court System

ADNA Board member Dorthey Hurst moderated a panel on issues affecting the court system. Panel participants were Major L.A. Hagin of the Atlanta Police Department and Bill Riley, former Chief Judge of the Atlanta Municipal Court. Issues discussed included: the public’s perception that court judgements in similar cases are often inconsistent; the need for better communication between the branches of government that handle issues of crime and criminality; and quality of life issues of concern to Downtown residents. In conclusion, Hurst suggested that the establishment of an ADNA “court watch” could increase ADNA member awareness of issues affecting the court system, while putting elected officials on notice that Downtown residents will hold them accountable for their actions.
