May 8, 2001

Below are minutes for the May 8, 2001, meeting of the Atlanta Downtown Neighborhood Association. Notes were written by Wendy Darling.

To begin: Thank You E-Bar! Once again we owe thanks to E-Bar for hosting us.

Thanks to Ritz-Carlton

Thanks to the Ritz-Carlton for providing a gift certificate for two to Atlanta Grill restaurant. We had a drawing and the certificate went to a pair of new residents!.

Downtown Tour of Lofts

The Sixth Annual Downtown Tour of Lofts & Lifestyles is coming in week and half -- May 19th and 20th. Presented by Central Atlanta Progress, the Tour features a tour of 25 of Downtown's most unique residential properties including lofts, condos, live-in workspaces and apartments. Three neighborhood are included: Fairlie-Poplar, Marietta Street Corridor, and Castleberry Hill. Tours will leave from Centennial Olympic Park and free shuttle buses and walking will let you explore the world of lofts without a car. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 event days. To advance purchase tickets, call 404-5770-0330. For more info: 404-577-7477 or see http://www.lofttour.com.

***Volunteers*** are needed to make the Tour a true success. Volunteers work one of the two days of the tour -- usually serving as host or hostess at a loft or giving directions or otherwise helping out the crowds -- in exchange for free tickets which they can use on the day they're not working. Volunteers also get free Loft Tour T-shirts and invites to the After-Tour party at Trinity. To volunteer, use the contact info. provided above.

Arts News

It's not quite officially announced, but a bunch of big local sponsors are going to be sponsoring a major free concert series -- called On The Bricks -- coming this summer to Centennial Olympic Park. The concerts were run Friday evenings and will feature big NAME bands. More information as that becomes available and of course it will be big local news.

With an ArtsCard (only $10), you'll receive discounts to visual and performing arts events from the Atlanta Opera, Aurora Theater, Shakespeare Tavern, High Museum, Atlanta Symphony, Theatrical Outfit, Atlanta Ballet, and many others. Members are eligible for weekly ticket giveaways and can also attend advance film screenings and special events exclusively for ArtsCard holders. You can enjoy an entire season of discounts (renewing annually on September 1). For more information, call 404-371-9560 or see http://www.artscard.org.

Central Atlanta Progress is on track to bring ArtScape in for a third year at Woodruff Park this coming October. The show has already been juried and 120 artists have been selected from the 600 who applied! Look for more news on that as the time comes closer.

City Council Updates

The City Council redistricting battles seem to have been fought and Downtown is going to remain all in one district, rather than being split up, which had been one of the proposals.

City Coucilperson Debi Starnes (dstarnes@ci.atlanta.ga.us) would like to remind residents that The Palace, a nightclub at 91 Broad Street, is still pushing for a change in status. There is a hearing schedule this week -- get in touch with Debi's office for details.

City Councilmember Cathy Woolard is hosting an information session on Wednesday, May 9, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Southface Institute, 241 Pine Street, to give people an opportunity to learn more about her campaign for Atlanta City Council President. For more information, visit http://www.cathywoolard.com, email campaign@cathywoolard.com, or call 404-278-3728.

Cathy Woolard is also sponsoring "Clean Up Atlanta" event Saturday, May 19, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., to pick up the Old Fourth Ward - Edgewood Corridor area. Volunteers are needed. Meet at the Thumbs-Up Diner (Bradley St. and Edgewood Ave.). More information: volunteer@cathywoolard.com or 404-278-3728.

Association Gets Money

The DNA already has a treasurer, but until tonight we didn't need one because we had no money. Tonight, however, we learned that Central Atlanta Progress is generously donating $1,000 to the DNA in return for the work we've done promoting the Loft Tour, gahering up volunteers and filling Downtown with residents. We thank CAP very much and plan on getting to work making this money do good work for us. One of the first steps will be to get the Association official non-proift tax status and to set up a bank account.

Money for Businesses

Ruby Jones spoke on a busines loan program opening up through the Empowerment Zone. There will be about $3 million of loans available to qualifying applicants. Loans will go to businesses looking to relocate to the Empowerment Zone (which includes 36 intown neighborhoods), new businesses wanting to open up, and existing businesses that would like a loan to finance expansion or further their business goals. Basically they want to give out money to people who are interested in creating businesses which will bring jobs to the Empowerment Zone.

Ruby also promoted the One Stop Capitol Shop, which will be having a Small Business Expo at the Civic Center on Thursday, May 10th, from 12 to 7 p.m. The Atlanta One Stop Capital (AOSCS), a 501 (c) (3) business assistance center, is a collaborative effort with the US Small Business Administration (SBA), Business Information Center (BIC) and the US General Store housed under one roof at City Hall East. For more information on OMC, see http://www.oscs.org or call 404-853-7675 or visit their offices at City Hall East (675 Ponce de Leon).

Discounted MARTA Fares

There is the possibility that the DNA may be able to hook up Downtown residents with discounted monthly MARTA passes. If you are interested, please email downtownatl@hotmail.com.

Thanks everyone!

- Wendy Darling, DNA Secretary/Treasurer/Webmaster
