July 20 Vote on Sales Tax Increase
for Water and Sewer Improvement
Michael Lee, a Downtown resident and Coordinator of the Sewer
and Water Sales Tax Steering Committee, spoke about the upcoming
July 20 vote on a temporary, one-cent sales tax to support
federally-mandated improvements in the city sewer and water
system. Lee urged Downtown residents to educate themselves
on this issue. The tax provides a dollar-for-dollar rollback
in water rate increases that go into effect in January. It
is expected to generate more than $70 million dollars in revenue.
Without the tax, according to Lee, a $100 monthly bill for
sewer and water will increase to $143 in January 2005. With
the tax, the bill will increase to about $113.
